Smart Men: Dare to be Fashionable

I’ve always been a huge fan of intellectual men that can dress. I think there is something  so attractive about a man who cares about the way he looks and puts effort into his attire, whether at the office or out.  I love a guy that can pull of a nice looking suit- the Wall Street type. But, I also dig guys that can pull off a stylish relax and casual look without trying too hard.  Just like clothing can translate confidence in  women, it does the same for men.

There is always a huge misconception that men in corporate jobs can hardly dress (somewhat agree).  But there are always a few in each corporate environment, that have no shame to dare to be fashionable.

In a city like DC, most guys you see riding the metro or walking  to their office jobs are wearing the staple ‘conservative-norm’ classic suit.  Hmmm… Not very eye-catching, well, not in the right way, at least.  Therefore, when I see a guy that can truly dress, I am the first one to call it out. A smart men that can dress is simply IRRESISTIBLE!

Working  a conservative job, like in a lobbying, law or  finance firm doesn’t  necessarily mean you have to represent yourself as “FLAT” and unattractive as the job description. Men that are smart are even much hotter when they know how to show that intelligence through their clothes.

Meet John Burns- a Washington, DC based attorney at Krooth & Altman LLP, that specializes in  commercial real estate, employment and bankruptcy matters. During his daily duties, he helps sin matters with banks and institutional lenders, developers, holding companies, entrepreneurs, commercial enterprises and individuals. Sounds interesting, but lets move back to the fun part!

I met John a few years back as I was coming out of L2-a posh’ members only’ -venue in  DC. I was on my way out, while he was just getting there and a friend introduced us.  As I shook his hand, I stared at him up and down, fascinated by his amazing style.  He was very, very well dressed-which is something you don’t see too much of in the city.

I must confess, that at first, he and I didn’t really click.  I think my stare, and the fact that I kind of poked fun at his way of introducing himself as JOHN BURNS, rubbed him the wrong way. I was so abrupt by his style of introduction, that I think my thought of- “did he seriously just say his full name to me?” look -was very transparent.  But, like many times, first impressions can go a long way.  And now, he is one of my best side kicks at social gatherings, that never fails to come  better dressed than me!

A profession like being an attorney can be challenging for young professionals that want to have a social life. And even more so, allow them to have time to even think about what to wear.  But John, somehow, always finds time to come out and support many causes in the city while  looking fresh.

Whether right  out of the office, or at a weekend gathering, he makes sure he is always dressed to impress. From his shoes, to his shirt, socks, and tie, his look is very well polished and stylish. He manages to come dressed for the occasion at all times- a gala, social gathering or day at the pool.  As you can see in these photos.

Ladies, this one is a catch!…  Happy to make appointment and work out a finder’s fee after this post! hehe…

Because I am so obsessed with his style, I decided to meet with John and pick his brain sinceI’ve wanted to write a post about men’s fashion in the corporate world.  In my Q & A with John, I felt that it was important to learn how his brain worked. And here is what this young attorney ‘ professionalista’ had to say:

  • What’s your staple corporate office attire?

Slim Fitting European Suit.  Makes a statement in and out the office.

  • Why do you think dressing well is important for men in your industry and the corporate world?

As business professionals you are judged immediately by your appearance, rather you like it or not.  So that is why it is of the utmost importance to put your best foot forward at all times.  That being said, one does not need to spend a ton of money on a business wardrobe, it is easy to dress the part and not break the bank.

  • Who is your favorite brand?

I am a big fan of some small NYC Men’s boutiques. And I  just started trying out more custom pieces.

  • What fashion tips can you give  men in corporate America?

A nice fitting tailored suit makes an immediate statement

  • What’s one clothing essential you can’t leave the house without?

An accenting pocket square

  • If a guy wanted to copy some of your looks on a budget, what brands do you suggest?

Zara has some really nice things that aren’t too expensive.

  • What’s your favorite outfit on a woman?

I nice form-fitting suit (not too over the top) with some heels.  Great combination of business and femininity.

Hope this post can  teach some of  those khaki wearing/wrinkled suit men out there to think twice before stepping out of your apartments and into the office. Very passé and not a very attractive look. Fellas! It’s time you start thinking about your attire!

Brains and intelligence is essential, but if you are trying to impress to the next level- whether at a board meeting or a date-  Docks, polo shirts and  not polished suits are not going to cut it! First impressions are very important in business. And when it comes to us-  women like men, not children. Your outfit can say much about how you feel. There is nothing more attractive than a confident and mature  man.  Trust me! :)
